Used to like coming here after a day at Cherry & Webb. But for some reason, the last two years have been stale. We went last Friday around happy hour time. The idea was simple: beach, shorts, t-shirts, sandals, margarita, chilling and maybe mingling with people. It was a beautiful sunny late afternoon. Restaurant was open and the parking lot was half full and the back deck, which is where you want to be, had me, my three friends, and five people sitting on the lower decks. In other words....the Back Eddy is empty. You get a feeling that the place has seen its better days. Im giving up on. The people who are reviewing this and loving it, are clearly first timers. If you are looking for a nice place to eat and happen to be in a remote place like the Westport Point, then it is the only game in town. But if youre not from Westport do not bother. First, there are nicer seafood spots in New Bedford. The Black Whale is better. If you are looking for a restaurant that also has some semblance of a night life at its bar, dont go to the Back Eddy. Go to The Cove (not the Tipsy Seagull, please). The Back Eddy is only crowded in the restaurant side on weekends, which is actually not a good sign for this establishment's future. It is a disappointment. It could be so much more. I dont see how the management is interested in upgrading what could be a summer gold mine. If youre in Westport and want to spend a lot of money on food near a river, then go to the Back Eddy. If not, you should try those two places i mentioned instead.

2 people for lunch which was 2 mediocre entress, one very small appetizer, bowl of soup (canned clams, not fresh) and 2 sodas was $80. It's a big deal to substitute a side (look at the "fine print" on the back of the menu). The cornbread was cold, and putting a wedge of watermelon on the plate was a nice touch, but not if that kind of garnish warrants an.over $10 difference between a pork sandwich and a pork platter.

The steak appetizer we got was not described as a cold appetizer and it came out so fast you knew it was sitting in the fridge, especially because some.of the "slaw" it's served with was turning brown. Waitresses looked miserable, I felt terrible for them, they were being hovered over by either a manager or the owner. Whoever this guy was, he was more interested in being a boss than he was with checking on customer satisfaction. Maybe 2 other tables had people at them.

I always keep in mind that when I go to a restaurant I'm not just paying for a meal - I'm paying for service, no mess to clean up, and the costs associated with owning a business. I'm not naive to waterfront location playing a part in the prices of the food here, I just hope whoever prices this stuff out learns that matching atmosphere, attitudes and service as well as quality food and customer service are what makes a place successful.

This place is nothing to write home about and preys on the fact that there are tourists and hungry fishermen coming in.

Overrated, overrun gold mine for the owner. Being one of the most popular places in the area for many years, the restaurant has aquired low standards. We had fish and steak, both charred and overcooked. Pulled pork was dry. Substitution of sides was not possible, our preference was in limited supply. Desserts were ok, Creme brulee came out well.
Crowded place anyways, but that's due to a lack of alternatives. Very noisy.
Prices are at the level of Mills Tavern, the food is more like Applebees.
